District Profile (in brief)
Mandla is a tribal district situated in the east-central part of Madhaya Pradesh. The district lies almost entirely in the catchment of river Narmada & its tributaries. A district with a glorious history, Mandla comprises of numerous rivers and endowed with rich forests. The world's famous Tiger Sanctuary, Kanha National Park located in the district, is one of the hottest targets for both the domestic as well as foreign tourists.
Mandla district is surrounded by Jabalpur, Balaghat, Dindori, Seoni districts of MadhyaPradesh & Rajnandgaon of Chattisgarh districts in north, south, east and west respectively.
Surrounded by Holy Narmada River, Mandla is said to be the field of Mandan Mishra and therefore it has been designated as "Mahishmati Nagri". Mandla town has many old temples and internationally famous Kanha National Park, which is about 80 km. away from district proper. Also there is a fossils garden known as "Ghughwa Fossil Park" which is about 85 km away. A beautiful monument of Gondwana kingdom "Palace of Ram Nagar" is still spreading the glory of Gondwana Kingdom. Ram Nagar is only 30 km. away from Mandla.
Tribal population dominates the district. Main sub castes of tribals are Baiga, Gond, Kol & Pradhan. Majority of them is depending on forest for their livelihood.
Socially less developed, weak economy, conservative attitude, blind faiths, unhygienic habits of smoking, alcoholism, careless attitude towards health and lack of education especially for girls are the main reasons which have resulted in the poor literacy, status and educational backwardness of the district.

The district Mandla is situated in the east central part of Madhya Pradesh, III, Agro climatic Zone (Northern Hill of Chhatisgarh). Mandla is a tribal dominated district, located in the hilly and forest areas of Maikal hill range of the Satpuras, in mostly scattered habitation. The District situated in the east-central part of Madhaya Pradesh lies almost entirely in the catchment of river Narmada & its tributaries. A district with a glorious history, Mandla comprises of numerous rivers and endowed with rich forests. The world's famous Tiger Sanctuary, Kanha National Park located in the district, is one of the hottest targets for both the domestic as well as foreign tourists. The extreme length of the district is about 133 Kms. from north to south and extreme breadth is 182 Kms from east to west. It covers a total area of 8771 Sq.Km. and consists a total population of 10, 53,522.There are 9 blocks 6 Tehsils and 1221 habitable villages in the district.

The Major crop of the district are Paddy (111400 ha), Maize (19000 ha), Pigeon pea (3100 ha), Urid (2900 ha) in Kharif followed by Wheat (38800 ha), peas (15300 ha), Mustard (14300 ha), Lentil (11,500 ha) and Gram (6138 ha.) in Rabi. The Topography of the district is undulating and Soil type is Light soil (11,21,48 ha), Medium soil (78016 ha), Heavy soil (53636 ha).i.e.46,32 &22 % respectively.
